Prostate Cancer Awareness Activities in ACT Region in
International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The main aim of the month will be to make men and their loved ones more aware of the incidence of prostate cancer among Australian men and of the simple steps they can take to minimise the risk of falling prey to this insidious disease.
The community is gradually becoming aware that deaths from prostate cancer exceed those from breast cancer, but for a variety of reasons, many men are unaware of the risk they run. There are two simple messages.
1. Early detection maximises the chance of successful treatment.
2. If you are male and fifty years of age or more, talk to your GP annually about prostate cancer and, if necessary, be tested. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, you should consult your GP from the age of forty.
In the ACT, some of the events planned for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month are:
- the launch of a website for the Prostate Cancer Support Group ACT Region and the release of a new Support Group brochure by the Health Minister, Ms Katy Gallagher on Thursday 2 September;
- awareness raising barbecues at Bunnings stores – Fyshwick on Friday 10 September and Belconnen on Saturday 18 September;
- participation in the Self Help Awareness Groups exhibition at the Weston Community Centre on Wednesday 8 September; and
- The National Press Club presentation “Men – the Forgotten Cancer Victims” and the launch of her book “What Men Want – In Bed” by Bettina Arndt on Tuesday 31 August.
